various ghost stories

Daniel Philip Marks, Gladstone, Virginia, October 1976

One day in October my girlfriend and I were returning from a trip to her mother's house in Narrows, Virginia. It was a cold, wet, Sunday afternoon when we returned to our house on Route 60E, a few miles outside of Amherst, Virginia. My girlfriend, Faye, had decided to run up to the grocery store up in Amherst which was about 5 miles from where we lived. This left me with time to take a hot shower while she was gone. I went into the bathroom and started the shower when suddenly our dog started barking loudly. This is when I shouted, "Who's there and what do you want?" Why I did that, I'll never know, but I proceeded to wrap a towel around myself and venture into the kitchen where I saw this huge Civil War soldier holding a sword in his right hand. I could see right through him, and I must tell you I've never been more scared in my life. So scared that I walked out onto the front porch in a towel holding our family dog. While outside, I stood there in the pouring rain terrified. If one of our neighbors had been home, I would have gone there but no one was. After about 30 minutes, I opened the front door and saw that the ghost was no longer there. I then ran and got dressed and by this time my girlfriend had returned. I told her what had happened. We didn't see him anymore until it rained again. For some reason, that's the only time we felt his presence. I also found out from the man who built our house that after digging our basement, he had seen and described the same ghost to us. He figured it was a soldier who died and never crossed over. Since we sold the house, four families have occupied that residence, but only for a short while each. By the way, the house was 20 miles from Appomattox, Virginia, sitting on Civil War battleground.

Cynthia Estrada, Chicago, Illinois, Ongoing

We moved to this house and right after we bought it the previous owner told my mom to bless the house because her son had died in there. We did bless the house but that didn't stop her son. A year or so passed and my little brother was born. We've all heard that babies have the ability to see things we can't. When he was a toddler he would spend most of his time upstairs in my room and when we asked him what he was doing he would say that he was playing with "the little boy." My mom freaked out and we got the house blessed again. A couple of years passed and nothing happened. Then it all started happening at once. My younger sister said she saw a little girl playing with her dolls. She said she saw it from the corner of her eye and that when she looked, the doll was in its place. I also saw this girl on my bed one night. I opened my eyes and saw her body facing me but her face was turned toward my toys. When I opened my eyes to see her clearly, she was gone. There was also an incident when I heard someone coming up the stairs to my room. I heard running footsteps and I even saw a shadow, I assumed it was my little brother, but when I called his name and got no response, I decided to look for him. When I did go look for him there was no one there and my brother was barley coming up the stairs. Was it the little boy? Since then the house was blessed one more time and it has stopped, but that's the way it is. It stops and it comes back. Maybe it is the little boy looking for his mom. But then how do you explain the little girls?

Re: various ghost stories

Kevin, Rock Rapids, Iowa, Late 2007/Early 2008

This took place in an old movie theater turned into a restaurant in a small town in northwestern, Iowa. A friend of mine, Michelle, bought this old theater the summer of 2007. It had been redone as a restaurant in the mid 1990s, and had several failed attempts before my friend bought it. There have actually been numerous things that go on here. Thing is, being in a small town in the Bible belt, few people want to talk about it. The main one is that there has been reported by numerous witnesses over the years, even as a movie theater, a man in blue that has been seen. Michelle's cousin was taking pictures right after she first opened the doors, and in one of the pictures there is a man in blue peeking out from one of the old emergency exit curtains. There was no one else in the building at the time, just Michelle and her cousin. I saw this picture, and you can see this man as clear as day, only thing is, there is no face.

There have been other things that have happened there too, but nothing quite like this next bit. One evening, just before closing time, there was a few of us chatting in the bar having a drink. The rest of the restaurant was closed up. It was Michelle, me, and two other friends that came in on occasion. As we are sitting there, the very clear sound of a baby crying was heard from the closed, darkened restaurant. This went on for a good 10 or 20 seconds. When it stopped, one of the other guys asks if we all heard that. Silently we all looked at each other and nodded. We all went into the restaurant area and turned all of the lights and searched everywhere. Mind you, this is a small town, in the middle of the week at about midnight. Nothing else is open at that time of night except for the bar a couple of blocks away.

Another time a few weeks later, Michelle's best friend was in town, so she wanted to show the place off. She was giving her the tour, showing the old apartment upstairs and the big band stage on the top floor. About ten minutes later, Michelle comes down and peeks around that corner and says, "guess who just saw Blue?" I ran over and her friend was visibly shaken. They were up in the ballroom where the bands used to play, in the dark, with just their flashlights on. Michelle was telling her a little about the place. Just then her friend sees a pair of legs walk between, just legs that faded out above the waste. I ran up with her with my camera and took some pictures, and of course nothing showed up, story of my life with that stuff. Alas, a few months ago, Michelle had to close up shop due to it being a money pit and the bank not disclosing all of the things wrong with the building. So we weren't able to do any really investigating into it. Who knows, maybe I might buy it just for that...

Dawn, [location withheld], Since July of 2007

To give you some background, my family has always had an intuitive bent. My mother was psychic, though she never mentioned it. She was afraid of it, and of what others would say. She just knew what we were doing, and whether or not we were into trouble. I'm intuitive, to a point, an energy worker, and I can see the energy field around plants, people, and even inanimate objects, I'm able to work with "ghosts" and spirits. If they're stuck here, I've helped a few cross over to where they should have gone. My daughter has precognitive dreams, and my granddaughter can see spirits and interact with them.

My 30-year-old son died in July of 2007. The loss was unexpected, and hit the entire family very hard. John died three hours or so before I arrived home from a trip. The train bringing me home was about four hours late. Regret over that trip will haunt me for a bit. If only I'd paid attention to the voice in my head that urged me to stay home...

Since John's death, I've had many instances that tell me he's still about. He comes and goes between places and planes of existence, wherever the need takes him. One day I overslept, and I could feel him shaking my shoulder gently, I heard his voice saying, "Mom, mom," just as he would in life. I responded with, "I know, John. I know." As I came to full wakefulness, I realized that he was dead. I used to come home, and the front hall would reek of vodka, cigarette smoke, and the awful smell of the cologne he liked so well. Since this aroma was particularly his, I guessed it was John's way of greeting me. I'd say, "Hi, John," and the smell would disappear! I feel his presence about me so often. One of my friends at work would tell me that John had appeared to him, or would follow him home. My friend gave me info that only John could relate. It was a nice validation.

John always swore he would watch over my daughter and her kids, and that's where a lot of his activity centers. When he's sending a warning, he turns on anything that's electronic, like a battery powered toothbrush, a shaver, the TV, whatever will make noise and get someone's attention. He's scared my daughter silly a few times, the first time was at 2:00 am. My daughter thought one of the kids had gotten up and was playing in the bathroom. All of the electric tooth brushes, and the shaver were on. When she checked on the kids, they were fast asleep. She took the items to her room so that they would stay off. Suddenly the TV went on in the living room, and things sounded as though they were being moved about. She got up to turn off the TV, but didn't find anyone in the living room. That's when she realized that her brother was the culprit. My daughter now realizes that John isn't being malicious. He just needs to get her attention, and then things will settle down. She has a violent ex-boyfriend, and whenever he's thinking of doing something that will cause her harm, things start going off like crazy. She knows that this guy is going to do something because a friend has been keeping her informed, after the fact. John's ability to set things off has become his sister's early warning detection system!

I don't call John a "ghost." To my mind, ghosts are beings caught between planes of existence, many times not even realizing that they've passed on. John's spirit is conscious. He can go from our plane of existence, into the "light" or whatever you want to call it, and back. He brings protection, love, and a marvelous sense of humor. I was crying one day over his loss, and saying out loud that I should have been kinder, helped him out more, and I heard his voice loud and clear in my right ear, "Damn straight!" And he was laughing, which made me laugh. What he said was meant to be a sarcastic joke. I miss being able to hug him, going places with him, and the normal day-to-day stuff, but I know that his spirit survives, and that gives me great comfort.

So many things have happened since John's death. They validate the soul's or spirit's survival beyond the physical plane. It's changed his sister's perception of death, brought insight to others, and if I ever had a doubt, it's gone now.

Simona Lopez, Los Chavez, New Mexico, January 22, 2007

It was the middle of the night on January 22, 2007, my husband and I were asleep, but I woke up to use the bathroom. When I came back, I climbed into bed and I was pulling the blankets up when I noticed something bright on the wall at the other side of the room. I sat up and watched it. As it got brighter it became a mist. I starred at it and it was just floating there -- it was well above the ground -- it was a long oval shape almost like a human shape, but there were no visible features just a mist; smoke like. I was frozen I couldn't move or say anything. I just laid down, pulled the blankets over my head, and started to cry. My husband woke up and asked, "What's wrong?"

I couldn't speak, I was just sobbing. Finally I said, "I just seen something. I don't know what it was, it was a white mist." I couldn't stop crying, I was so scared. After about an hour I finally calmed down but I didn't sleep in there for about three days. I bought a candle with a picture of the sacred heart of Jesus on it, lit it, and put it in my room. After that it felt a little better but I still have an eerie feeling about my room and my home.
